WASTE in SPACE.png

W A S T E in S P A C E: Art 4 Climate Justice (Two-Day Immersive Fundraiser) will take place at a venue located in Brooklyn on December 20th & 21st 2019. This two-day event will use art as a means to shed light on the omniscient presence of waste in our lives, building awareness of the unavoidable existence of climate change and its effects on our lives using various movement-based workshops and performance. We will fill the event space with soft plastic waste, illuminating the fact that we are already living in a world populated by mirco-plastics and toxicity. How do our movements change when we have to negotiate not only other bodies in space but plastic waste? How does the presence of the plastic alter how we think, view, and interact? How do our interactions with the plastic affect our emotional state?

Friday December 20th we will offer yoga, contact improvisation, puppeteering, repurposing/upcycling workshop, and community energy work. With curiosity, we will examine the impact of the presence of plastic on a somatic level, and investigate whether movement can enable us to move through/with the collective grief extorted by climate crisis. The evening will conclude with a performance of Embrace(d) (working title).

Saturday December 21st we will offer yoga and then set-up a holiday marketplace. The marketplace will be a space for local vendors to sell sustainable handmade goods: ceramics, bags, beauty products, and more. The evening will conclude with a second performance of Embrace(d) (working title), and event will climax in a Dancing for Justice Dance Party.

During the course of both days we will be collecting non-recyclable soft plastic waste, Brita filters, and toothpaste tubes. We will be recycling these products through Terracycle (https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/).

Throughout, and leading up to this event, we will be raising funds to donate towards combating the climate crisis. The funds will be donated to Indigenous Rising: An Indigenous Environmental Network Project (http://indigenousrising.org/).
